We watch Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and all of these fantasies, but the biggest visual disconnects are for real. We share this planet with extraordinary creatures like caracals, and until recently we did not seem to give a damn about how fantastic that is. We must learn to respect the biodiversity of this planet before we destroy it. I think the winds of change now have momentum. There is no doubt that there is increasing awareness that our planet is under threat from a combination of man-made threats. As I travel the world, I see the consequences of global warming, population growth, habitat loss, and poaching firsthand.
We all have a collective responsibility to do whatever we can. I am reminded of Gandhi’s quotation: “The human voice can never reach the distance
that is covered by the still small voice
of conscience.”
I am proud to be a global ambassador for UBS and will help whenever I
can on its sustainability campaign. The fact that so many corporations are now fully engaged in conservation and sustainability is an illustration of how far we have come in the last few years. There is no doubt that awareness of the need to protect the world’s fauna has been brought from the back of our conscience to the forefront.
