Forza Napoli

Naples, Italy - 2025
Naples, Italy

Football is a cult in the deeply spiritual metropolis of Napoli. It is close to a matter of life and death. Neapolitans’ abiding passion for the game allowed for Diego Maradona’s unlikely elevation to the status of a god and he will always have residency in the city’s pantheon.

To be in town last month when Napoli won the Scudetto for only the fourth time in their long history was a head spinning evening that will live long in my memory. It is difficult to conceive how any city anywhere in the world could ever have been noisier. The boundless and intense celebrations extended to every tiny street and the city centre was a human gridlock. At the final whistle it took me two hours to travel 500 yards. Napoli has an energy that eats most visitors alive and never more so than on that balmy May night. It is a unique city that defies any mere categorisation; other than perhaps “passionate”.

My leaning was to film the hundreds of thousand watching the game in the Piazza del Plebiscito. I needed to necessarily face away from the big screen and wait for an opening Napoli goal. When it came, through the new Napoli hero - Scott McTominay - a visual feast evolved in front of my camera. It’s never easy in those lighting conditions, but the flares certainly helped me.

Given McTominay’s nationality, it is apposite that all proceeds from the sale of this picture will go to one of our leading charity partners - Street Soccer Scotland - who use football to create lasting positive change for the most at risk and socially disadvantaged people across Scotland and London.
