The kid within me still dreams up notions as to how my fantasy bar on the final frontier would look. One thematic angle I play with is that it could be very cold inside - a bit like Tarantino’s principal stage in the Hateful Eight.
Josie Canseco does here what she does best - she is made for this role. My original idea was that her presence should be an oasis of warmth against a backdrop with a sense of total cold or menace. But the more we played with the narrative, the more we felt she needed to have a cold attitude too. In fact, it was her mood that would determine the mood of the entire saloon.
There were enough visual disconnects in the frame to need Josie to be the glue that stuck the random mix together. It was her bar, not the wolf’s or the old mountain man’s. The bison did not get a vote.
So, the look I went for was one with authority and a generous amount of sexuality. The bar may ostensibly look bitterly cold and territorial, but with our leading lady holding court, there is every reason to gamble and stay for a drink.
I think she looks a little lonely.
