The Nikkor 200mm F2 lens is optically about as good as it gets for a mid-range telephoto lens and I cannot remember the last assignment when I did not bring my trusted friend along for the ride. It is optically outstanding and the definition and detail in this portrait showcase its operation capability.

The premise of this idea came when location scouting with Kevin Richardson at his sanctuary. There is a small river that runs through his land and in a few places deeper pools develop. I knew that if we could place a cage in a deep pool, I could then shoot standing from the cage and in effect be at eye level with the lion should it come for a drink at a preferred drinking spot.

There are all sort of things in the water that can get into the cage - like water snakes - and I have certainly had more relaxing afternoons. The water was so muddy that it was impossible to see what might be brushing against a leg. But luckily, I am here to tell the tale.

This male lion is a white lion - he has a mythological look - something pulled out of a fairytale (hence the title of the image).The eyes in the photograph are pivotal - he is right on me and has a look of clear intent. Our eye is grabbed and then it is a little difficult to look anywhere else. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the famous 1914 enlisting poster with Lord Kitchener’s pointing finger and the words ‘Your Country Needs You’.

Kevin and I have collaborated over many years - he is a great friend with an undeniable commitment to helping these animals. The lion could have no greater friend in Africa.
