This in one of Africa’s oldest remaining white rhinos. Samson is 42 years old and is a colossus of an animal. To have an encounter with him is a high-octane experience such is his formidable size and Jurassic features. He is a reminder of the extraordinary breadth of wildlife with which we cohabit earth - there is no more primeval species on the planet and when they come big, they come big.
But Samson is a secret rhino - we cannot say where he lives. This is a sad reflection of the value of his horn to poachers. What we can say, however, is that this picture has been released to raise money to help with his continued protection.
This is a first for us, but it seems entirely appropriate. There was no way I could have taken this photograph without the help of the good people who keep a watch over him and know his behaviour day in, day out. When the light fades, men with guns appear from the forest, but they are the good guys whose job it is to keep Samson safe.
